Extracurricular Activities in Student Development

It has been argued that extracurricular activities are not as important in a student’s life, some parents worry that adding extra things on their children's plates might compromise their academic performance.

Students too are not left out in this dilemma, with some worrying that participating in extracurricular activities may take too much time from their schoolwork, thus affecting their grades.

However, the myth has over the years been debunked by numerous studies. Studies reveal that extracurricular activities can boost your grades and revamp your outlook on a school in general. Extracurricular activities have been proven to be just as important as academics. They both complement each other in a bid to help develop a well- rounded student equipped with more social skills as opposed to one who only concentrates on their books true to the adage all work and no play...

Heaps of studies have been conducted on the role of extracurricular activities, and they all reveal and agree that education should go beyond the four classroom walls; it should be more than just books.

There are a host of activities students can choose from and participate as long as they have enough time left for their studies.

Benefits

  • Enhanced academic performance

Studies have revealed that students who participate in extracurricular activities have significant improvement in their grades. Engaging in activities, one is passionate about increases the brain functionality, helps concentrate and manage time better, all of which result in higher grades. Skills learnt in clubs such as debate among others are instrumental in the classroom too, as they aid the student, learn how to express themselves better.

  • Polished time management skills

By engaging in extracurricular activities while also concentrating on school work, learners can strike a balance between the two and progressively can juggle in between and allocate different time for the activities. They learn how to plan their day ahead to include time to study and extracurricular activities times and eventually can make use of any free time they may have. Such students rarely procrastinate.

  • Paves the way for new social opportunities

Making friends can turn out to be an uphill task for most individuals, but thank to extracurricular activities one can engage with different people from all walks of life. You can interact and engage in expanding your social network which comes in handy when looking for a job.

  • Acquire indispensable life skills

Somethings just cannot be taught in a classroom setup. Engaging in extracurricular activities welcomes you to a world of real skills. Some of the crafts include; goal setting, teamwork, time management, prioritization, public speaking among others. The more you engage in, the more you'll develop these skills that apply to the rest of your life.

  • Earns you a sense of commitment

Students who partake in extracurricular activities mostly do so in groups. Each member has a different role that one plays to ensure that the activity is successful be it sports, team building name it. They learn to give it their all as group members depend on them. This sort of commitment and sense of responsibility eventually extends to other areas of lives for their good.
